What your speed test results mean

Download speed
How fast data reaches your device, in megabits per second (Mbps). It matters most for streaming, browsing and downloading files.
Upload speed
How fast your device sends data. It matters for video calls, sending photos and videos, cloud backups and live streaming.
Ping (latency)
The time a tiny message takes to reach the test server and come back, in milliseconds (ms). Lower is better: under 30 ms feels instant, and under 100 ms is fine for most things.
Jitter
How much your ping changes from moment to moment. Low jitter, under about 20 ms, keeps calls and games smooth.
Under load
Your ping while the connection is busy downloading. If it is much higher than your normal ping, your router is holding too much data in a queue (known as bufferbloat), which causes lag when someone else is streaming or downloading.

What is a good internet speed?

It depends on what you do online and how many people share the connection. These are typical needs for one person or device:

ActivityDownload speed
Email and browsing1 to 5 Mbps
HD video (1080p)5 to 10 Mbps
4K video15 to 25 Mbps
Video calls3 to 5 Mbps, both ways
Online gaming10 Mbps or more, with ping under 50 ms
Busy home, four or more people100 Mbps or more

How the Zippyy speed test works

When you tap GO, Zippyy first measures your ping with a series of tiny requests. It then downloads and uploads data over several connections at once for about eight seconds each. The first two seconds are left out while your connection gets up to speed, so the result shows your steady speed rather than the start-up.

The test runs on Cloudflare’s global network and uses the server closest to you. A full test can use a few hundred megabytes on fast connections.

Speed test questions

Why is my speed slower than what I pay for?

Broadband speeds are advertised as “up to” figures, usually measured over a cable. Wi-Fi distance and walls, older devices, other people online and busy evening hours all lower the speed you see. For the most accurate result, test on a laptop plugged into your router with a cable.

Why do different speed tests give different results?

Each test uses different servers and methods, and your connection changes from minute to minute. Run a few tests at different times and look at the typical result rather than a single number.

How can I make my Wi-Fi faster?

Put your router in a central, open spot away from walls and appliances. Use the 5 GHz band for devices close to the router, restart the router now and then, and keep its software up to date. For rooms far from the router, a mesh Wi-Fi system or a cable makes the biggest difference.

What is a good ping for gaming?

Under 20 ms is excellent, 20 to 50 ms is good, and above 100 ms you will notice lag. Low jitter, under about 20 ms, matters just as much for smooth play.

Does the speed test use my mobile data?

Yes. On a fast connection a full test can use several hundred megabytes, so take care if you have a limited mobile data plan.

Is Zippyy free? Do you keep my results?

Zippyy is free and needs no sign-up. Your recent results are saved only on your own device, and we don’t store them. See our privacy policy for details.
